Planning a Bombay Sapphire Distillery Wedding: A Hampshire Photographer’s Venue Recce
Imagine getting married infront of these magnificent glasshouses designed by Thomas Heatherwick.
There is something uniquely thrilling about visiting a venue ahead of a wedding day, especially when that venue is as steeped in character, architectural contrast, and history as the Bombay Sapphire Distillery at Laverstoke Mill. Nestled in the heart of the Hampshire countryside, this historic site has been producing fine craft for centuries, from high-grade banknote paper for the Bank of England in the 1700s through to world-renowned gin today.
Ahead of an upcoming August wedding here, I recently headed out to Laverstoke for a site recce. As a documentary wedding photographer in Hampshire, my goal during a venue walkthrough is never to create a rigid, step-by-step shot list of staged poses. Instead, I visit to study how the natural light moves across the red-brick architecture throughout the afternoon, explore quiet nooks for unscripted moments, and map out how the day will naturally flow so the couple can stay completely present with their guests.
Historic Heritage Meets First-Class Events
From the second you arrive at Laverstoke Mill, the blend of industrial heritage and contemporary design is striking. However, what truly sets a venue apart for both couples and wedding suppliers is the team behind the scenes.
During my recce, I met with Bombay Sapphire’s in-house events team, and their operation is exceptional. They treat every wedding and event with incredible care, seamlessly balancing the logistics of a working distillery with the warmth and polish required for an unforgettable celebration. Knowing that an expert, calm team is coordinating in the background gives couples total peace of mind. For me as a candid photographer, it allows me to focus entirely on capturing unfiltered emotions, spontaneous laughs, and real interactions without interrupting the flow of the day.

Iconic Architecture: The Heatherwick Glasshouses & Courtyard
One of the true visual crowns of the distillery is the magnificent pair of glasshouses designed by Thomas Heatherwick. Rising dramatically out of the historic red-brick buildings, these glass structures house the exotic botanicals used in the gin-making process. The open courtyard sitting directly in front of the glasshouses is an absolute dream the ceremony, reception drinks and post-ceremony celebrations.
During an August wedding, when the summer afternoon sun hits the glass, the light reflects in soft, golden hues across the courtyard. For couples seeking a relaxed, candid documentary style, this space allows guests to mingle naturally, sip bespoke cocktails, and enjoy the atmosphere while I work quietly around the edges, documenting honest memories as they unfold.
The River Test & Private Blue Rooms
Running straight through the heart of Laverstoke Mill is the crystal-clear River Test, famous across Hampshire for its chalk-stream purity. The sound of gentle water flowing through the grounds adds a soothing, idyllic feel to the entire venue. The small bridges and riverside pathways offer effortless, peaceful backdrops for a few quiet minutes away together after the ceremony. This really is a dream venue for wedding photography or any photography as it goes!
Inside, the venue boasts refined spaces such as the private Blue Rooms. Richly textured, intimate, and stylishly appointed, these indoor spaces provide a perfect setting for speeches, intimate wedding breakfasts, or cozy evening celebrations if the summer heat turns into a cool Hampshire night.
Looking Ahead to August
Scouting the Bombay Sapphire Distillery ahead of August has made me even more excited for what promises to be a stunning summer wedding. Combining rich Hampshire heritage, cutting-edge architecture, brilliant event management, and the relaxed rhythm of a summer celebration, Laverstoke Mill is an absolute gem for couples who want something stylish yet deeply authentic.
