Real Weddings: Amy & James’ Laid-Back Celebration at the Bombay Sapphire Distillery
The iconic green houses and river test that the service was held in front of.
When Amy and James first reached out to me, they were clear about what they wanted for their wedding day. They wanted an effortless, relaxed celebration without the pressure of a rigid, all-day timeline or endless hours of formal group photos. As a Hampshire documentary wedding photographer, my entire approach is built around capturing real moments as they naturally unfold, so we were an instant match.

They specifically booked me for my un-posed, candid style because they wanted to be present with their guests rather than hours spent staging shots. To fit their exact needs and keep things focused and affordable, they opted for my hourly rate package. Offering hourly coverage is something I love providing for couples who want high-quality, professional documentary coverage tailored strictly to the key parts of their day.
Here is a look into their incredible late August wedding at the iconic Bombay Sapphire Distillery.
A Ceremony Framed by Thomas Heatherwick’s Iconic Glasshouses
The Bombay Sapphire Distillery in Laverstoke is easily one of the most striking venues in Hampshire. The centerpiece of the historic site is the pair of Mediterranean and Tropical glasshouses designed by Thomas Heatherwick.
Amy and James held their outdoor ceremony directly in front of these soaring, curved glass structures. With the River Test flowing quietly alongside the courtyard, the setting provided an unforgettable backdrop as they tied the knot surrounded by close family and friends.

Navigating the Challenging 5PM Late-August Light
From a technical standpoint, a 5 PM ceremony in late August presents a unique set of light conditions. The late afternoon sun sat high enough in the sky to create strong highlights and harsh shadows across the courtyard, while the geometric glass of the greenhouses reflected brilliant bursts of direct sunlight.
Rather than fight the light or force the couple into shaded spots for artificial portraits, I leaned into my documentary approach. Working quickly with ambient light, subtle repositioning, and exposed shadows allowed me to capture the ceremony while preserving the warm, golden atmosphere of a summer evening.
Unposed, Real Moments Throughout the Day
After the ceremony, Amy and James spent their time doing exactly what they intended: mingling, laughing, and enjoying a drink and some food with their guests in the sun. Because they didn't want many formal or staged shots, I blended into the background to capture genuine interactions. We did sneak off for a super quick shoot around the glasshouses to make the most of the venue.
Whether it was candid shots of guests laughing during casual conversations or spontaneous guests checking out the greenhouses every image reflected the true feeling of the day without interfering with the flow of the event.

An Epic Dance Floor to End the Night
As soon as the speeches finished, the energy shifted straight to the dance floor with all the kids getting the ball rolling and some amazing tunes from DJ Nik Nak. From the moment the music kicked off, the dance floor remained packed for the entire evening and this was something Amy was really keen to document. She promised a party and they delivered!

Capturing evening receptions is always a highlight of my job. Using creative low-light techniques and flash, I was able to get right into the heart of the action, documenting the dodgy dance moves, impromptu singalongs, and chaotic fun as the party went late into the night.

Final Thoughts
It was an absolute privilege to be trusted by Amy and James to document such a relaxed, beautiful wedding at the Bombay Sapphire Distillery. Their day was a perfect example of how choosing an hourly rate package and prioritising a candid approach can result in a gallery full of authentic, timeless memories.
