Documentary wedding photography at Amber & Adam’s Upwaltham Barns Wedding - Sussex
The bride and groom share a quick kiss at blue hour in the stunning central courtyard
This summer I was incredibly lucky to be able to 2nd shoot at one of the Souths best venues. There is something undeniably special about stepping into a venue that feels steeped in history, character, and natural bloom. I had the pleasure of second shooting alongside the immensely talented Lucy Davis Photography for Amber and Adam’s breathtaking day at Upwaltham Barns. Be sure to check them both out below:

As a Hampshire based documentary wedding photographer, travelling into the heart of West Sussex to work at such a picturesque rustic venue was so exciting, especially when the day is packed with unscripted emotions, stunning light, summer flowers in full bloom and non-stop celebration.
Relaxed Morning Prep in Dedicated Spaces
One of the highlights of Upwaltham Barns is how thoughtfully designed the site is for wedding preparations. Having separate, beautifully appointed private spaces for both bride and groom preparation on-site makes morning coverage completely seamless.
While Lucy spent time capturing the bridal preparation, I was able to focus on Adam and his groomsmen. Second shooting allows for complete coverage of those quiet, nervous pre-ceremony moments. The banter, adjusting ties, giving of gifts and grabbing a quick moment of calm before guests arrive. My focus during prep is always rooted in documentary wedding photographer techniques: watching reactions unfold naturally without forcing poses.
Keeping an eye out for the little details that often carry so much importance to couples & families
The East Barn Ceremony: Character and Atmosphere
Amber and Adam held their service inside the magnificent East Barn. With its warm wooden beams, brickwork, and soft neutral tones, the atmosphere inside is intimate and romantic.
The barn creates a rustic backdrop that instantly puts guests at ease. As a photographer focused on candid wedding photography, capturing the guests energy as they wait for the bride and the joy and occasional tear as they watched the bride and groom tie the knot is such a pleasure and part of what makes this job so special.

A Courtyard Bathed in Golden Light & Bursting with Flowers
Following the ceremony, guests moved out into the vibrant central courtyard. Upwaltham Barns is truly overflowing with character, featuring lush floral displays and flower beds tucked around every corner.
From a photographer's perspective, the courtyard at Upwaltham Barns offers exceptional light. The white-rendered walls bounce soft, flattering ambient light across the space, creating ideal conditions for unposed guest photos. Whether capturing laughter over a glass of fizz or children playing around the courtyard features, it is a haven for candid wedding photography & staffed by a team that is truly second to none!
Little moments like this make this job so special.

Golden Hour Portraits in the Hilltop Meadow
As the afternoon shifted into evening, we made our way up to the meadow on the hill just behind the barns. This is where the magic of the location really shines and a truly iconic location in the South coast wedding space.
The sweeping views across the South Downs, paired with the warm glow of sunset, provided a breathtaking canvas for Amber and Adam’s portraits. Working alongside Lucy, we kept the couples shoot relaxed and interactive, encouraging genuine interactions while taking full advantage of the golden light rolling over the hills.
Surprise Singing Waiters, Live Band, and an Electric Dance Floor
If the daytime was filled with romance and natural beauty, the reception turned up the energy to eleven. Midway through the meal, surprise singing waiters took to the floor, instantly getting the entire room off their chairs, singing along, and waving napkins in the air. Capturing these spontaneous bursts of joy is where documentary storytelling thrives.
The high energy carried right through to the evening party. Driven by a brilliant live band, the dance floor filled up and made for some of my favourite dancefloor shots of the summer!
Final Thoughts
Shooting at a venue like this is a reminder of why rustic barn weddings remain so timeless. Upwaltham Barns provides an ideal blend of scenic beauty, brilliant lighting, and cozy character.
